Overview

The USW Analysis CoP is a group of defense professionals who write, produce, administer, or conduct analysis in support of military assessments.  The community will meet in person and virtually to catalog USW Operations Analysis best practices, share USW Operations Analysis process, analytical models and tools and modeling and simulation standards, identify and archive data pertaining to weapon characteristics, structures, tactics, etc., for both friendly and enemy forces, share insights and lessons learned with other communities such as Surface and Mine Warfare, Test & Evaluation and develop emerging capabilities such as Artificial Intelligence/Machine Learning.  In addition, the USW Analysis CoP will establish and maintain an analytical priority list, maintain a web site content identifying and summarizing undersea warfare-related operations analysis capabilities and activities within the MORS Community and to maintain an interface with the undersea warfare-related Operations Analysis activities throughout the MORS Community to facilitate quick response collaboration (e.g., peer reviews, a directory of key personnel, near-real time collaborative problem-solving, etc.).

Introduction:

Since the end of the Cold War, both fleet operations and Undersea Warfare (USW) analysis has changed their focus away from high end warfare.  As we respond to the CNO’s call to gear up for great power competition, we find that in the 25 years since the fall of the Berlin wall, some of our analytical expertise has atrophied or retired, at the same time that new technology introduces new analytical challenges.  To overcome these impediments to providing analytical support to the fleet, MORS is establishing an USW Analysis Community of Practice (USW CoP).

The USW CoP will be chaired by the Director of the Tactical Analysis Group (TAG) at the Undersea Warfare Development Center (UWDC), CAPT John McGunnigle, USN.  The USW CoP is open to anyone working on the USW problem set.  Its purpose is to provide a forum for communication and collaborating of undersea warfare, integrated antisubmarine warfare and theater antisubmarine warfare analytical issues within the MORS community.

The USW CoP expects to meet at least annually as part of WG 12, Maritime Operations, during the annual MORS Symposium, and then regularly throughout the year via classified and unclassified video conference.  Specific tasks that the CoP intend to undertake include:

  • Catalog USW Operations Analysis best practices
  • Share USW Operations Analysis process, analytical models and tools and modeling and simulation standards
  • Identify and archive data pertaining to weapon characteristics, structures, tactics, etc., for both friendly and enemy forces
  • Share insights and lessons learned with other communities such as Surface and Mine Warfare and Test & Evaluation
  • Develop emerging capabilities such as Artificial Intelligence/Machine Learning
  • Establish and maintain an analytical priority list
  • Maintain a web site identifying and summarizing undersea warfare-related operations analysis capabilities and activities within the MORS Community
  • Maintain an interface with the undersea warfare-related Operations Analysis activities throughout the MORS Community to facilitate quick response collaboration (e.g., peer reviews, a directory of key personnel, near-real time collaborative problem-solving, etc.)
