About the MORS Richard H. Barchi Prize

First awarded in 1983, the Barchi Prize recognizes the best paper submitted in response to a call that goes out to nominated presenters from each working or composite group at the annual MORS Symposium.

The winner is announced at the following MORS Symposium and is awarded $1,000. They will also be invited to present their work at that Symposium.

Purpose

  • To honor CDR Richard H. Barchi, USN, a former member of the MORS Board of Directors from 1977 until his sudden passing in 1982, and who was elected Chairman of the Publications Review Committee in 1980 and Vice President for Professional Affairs in 1981.
  • To provide recognition to the author(s) of the best presentations given in each working or composite group at the annual MORS Symposium.
  • To encourage a high degree of excellence in national security operations research.

Criteria

Nominees will be notified and invited to submit a written paper after the MORS Symposium in which they presented. The MORS Prizes and Awards Committee reviews the written papers submitted and makes recommendations to the MORS Executive Council, which makes the final decision on the prize recipient.

  • Submitted papers must:
    • Be an original and self-contained contribution to systems analysis or operations research.
    • Demonstrate an application of analysis or methodology, either actual or prospective.
    • Provide recognizable new insight into the problem or its solution.
    • Not have been previously awarded the Rist Prize or Barchi Prize.
