About the MORS Wayne P. Hughes Award

In 2007, MORS established the Junior Analyst Award to recognize young analysts who are already making an impact on operations research. The award now bears the name of retired Navy Captain Wayne P. Hughes, FS, Dean Emeritus of the Graduate School of Operational and Information Sciences at the Naval Postgraduate School and three-term director on the MORS Board.

The call for nominations is released annually in the winter.

Purpose:

  • To recognize junior analysts who are already contributing to meaningful projects and significant studies making an impact in the field of national security operations research.
  • To honor Captain Wayne P. Hughes, FS and his lifelong inspirational mentoring of students, colleagues, and military officers.

Criteria:

  • Candidates may be nominated by a mentor, boss, or colleague. The nominator should provide no more than two pages of relevant information on the candidate, including the candidate’s date of birth, education, work experience, and reasons for the nomination.
  • Nominees should be forty years old or younger as of 1 June of the year of nomination and have been doing operations research for less than 10 years.
  • Nominees should have distinguished themselves by one or more of the following accomplishments:
    • Outstanding publication(s) highlighting their analyses
    • Development of significant new analysis
    • Use of research results in the solution of military problems
  • Current members of the MORS Board of Directors are not eligible for this award.
