MORS will be holding its annual Education and Professional Development Colloquium (EPD) from 23-24 March. The EPD is an annual event designed to bring together students, junior analysts, and senior professionals to provide mentoring and professional development opportunities.
The purpose of the EPD is to challenge undergraduate students by presenting them with an opportunity to perform National Security operational research work. Students do this by participating in the Richard E. Rosenthal competition. The Rosenthal Student Competition is a “quick reaction analysis” competition which allows students from all participating institutions to work on an OR problem together, demonstrate their skills and learn different ways to approach a problem toward a team solution.
Young analysts who participate will learn about different formal education expectations of military, government civilians, private industry employees, and academics. This year's EPD will bring together speakers, practitioners, and students of operations research for an overdue look at military operations research beyond the military operation.

Ronald D. Fricker, Jr. is the Interim Dean of the Virginia Tech College of Science and a Professor of Statistics. He joined Virginia Tech in 2015 as the Head of the Department of Statistics and has served at the Senior Associate Dean in the College of Science. Prior to Virginia Tech, he was a faculty member in the Operations Research Department of the Naval Postgraduate School and, before that, a Senior Statistician at the RAND Corporation and the Associate Director of the RAND National Security Research Division (NSRD).
Dr. Fricker’s research is focused on studying the performance of various statistical methods for use in disease surveillance and statistical process control methodologies more generally. He is the author of more than 100 papers, monographs, and technical reports, as well as two books: Introduction to Statistical Methods for Biosurveillance published by Cambridge University Press and, most recently, with Steve Rigdon he co-authored a book published at the outset of the coronavirus pandemic, Monitoring the Health of Populations by Tracking Disease Outbreaks: Saving Humanity from the Next Plague.
Dr. Sam Huddleston is a Senior Data Scientist at Biocore LLC and the Technology Lead for the National Football League’s Digital Athlete Program. His research focuses on the development of novel methods for sensor fusion, predictive modeling (machine learning) for injury prevention, development of computer vision technologies, and simulation modeling to support prescriptive changes to sports rules and equipment. He served for more than 20 years as an Army officer, during which time he provided data science support to the Intelligence, Cyber, and Special Operations Communities and served on the faculty at both the U.S. Military Academy and the Naval Postgraduate School. He has been awarded the Military Operations Research Society’s Rist Prize and the Military Officers Association of America Joint Warfare Service Award for military operations research support to these communities. He holds a Ph.D. in Systems and Information Engineering and an M.S. in Systems Engineering from the University of Virginia and a B.S. in Mechanical Engineering from the U.S. Military Academy at West Point.
