2021 Vol. 26, #4 - A New Age in Conflict: A Statistical Analysis of the Maneuver Battle Lab’s 10x Combat Simulation
A 2019 combat simulation conducted by the Army’s Maneuver Battle Lab demonstrates that artificial intelligence (AI)-enabled robotic com-bat systems could fundamentally change future tactical-level land warfare. In the experiment, an attacking infantry platoon consistently routed a defending enemy company. The simulation reverses traditional military doctrine, which requires a full battalion to exe-cute this mission. The authors used a nonparametric statistical methodology to assess how these AI-enabled systems affected the platoon's combat effectiveness and quantified the observed force-multiplying effect. The U.S. Military has incorporated the study's findings in informational briefings to aid in program and funding approval.
