Overview

The MORS Certificate in Basic Excel Functions for Data Analysts is a five-day course designed for beginner to mid-level analysts who wish to enhance their Excel skills and learn new techniques. Participants will learn how to conduct analysis and prepare briefs for decision-makers using only Microsoft Office products. The course begins with the basics to provide a strong foundation, then builds up to a more in-depth look at various tools and functions within Excel. On the final day, participants will create and present a Capstone Project that combines everything they have learned throughout the week.

During the first 3 days (Week 1), the course material is taught with in-course work and overnight homework to reinforce the material. Between weeks, a practice Capstone Project is presented to give participants additional opportunities to apply what they’ve learned. Finally, during the last 2 days (Week 2) an actual Capstone Project is presented: the first day of Week 2, each student works the capstone project independently, while the second day, students are grouped into teams to present the results of the Capstone to the instructors.

Ms. Trena Lilly 

Trena Lilly is an operations research practitioner with degrees from North Carolina A&T State University, University of Maryland, College Park, and George Washington University. She joined the Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory (JHU/APL) in June 1997. Ms. Lilly is currently the Deputy Technical Lead for the Next Generation Surface Weapon (NGSW) Study and the Modeling and Simulation (M&S) Verification, Validation and Accreditation (VV&A) Lead for Aegis BMD. Ms. Lilly is a Past President and Fellow of the Military Operations Research Society (MORS).

Dr. Nicholas Shallcross 

Nicholas J. Shallcross, Ph.D. is an active-duty Army Officer with over 20 years of operational and staff experience at multiple echelons. Lieutenant Colonel Shallcross holds a B.S. in Mechanical Engineering from the Virginia Military Institute, a M.S. in Operations Research from the Air Force Institute of Technology, and a Ph.D. in Engineering from the University of Arkansas. He currently serves as the Senior Army Advisor to the President of the Naval Post Graduate School. He is also adjunct professor in the Industrial Engineering Department at the University of Arkansas. His research interests include decision analysis, set-based design, risk analysis, simulation, stochastic processes, and operations assessments. He is a member of ASEM, INCOSE, INFORMS, and MORS.
