2009 Vol. 14, #2 - Simulation Analysis for UAV Search Algorithm Design Using Approximate Dynamic Programming

Due to the relatively high cost of field experimentation with cooperative control of UAVs, computer simulation is often widely used to conduct these types of experiments. However, seldom is enough attention paid to the probabilistic and statistical methods underlying such simulations, weakening their effectiveness and precision. Based on the authors’ prior work on cooperative control, some simulation best practices are demonstrated to improve validity and accuracy. Of particular interest are modern, statistically sound random-number generators, and variance reduction via common random numbers. The hope is to transfer successful simulation-methods practice to an important applications community that has much potential to gain from it.
