"Analysis for a More Secure World"

2007 World of MORS

Welcome to the website of the Military Operations Research Society (MORS). Under the sponsorship of the Army, Navy, Air Force, Marine Corps, Office of the Secretary of Defense, The Joint Staff and the Department of Homeland Security, the objective of MORS is to enhance the quality and effectiveness of military operations research in order to better support decision making in the Department of Defense. This website describes the many facets of our Society our goals, history, code of ethics, membership, management, forums and publications.

Since its incorporation as a professional society in 1966, MORS has provided timely and valuable support to analysts and decision makers in the defense community.  The Society has a solid foundation of 40 years of service to our profession and we have hit the ground running on our 42nd year.  We have incredible opportunities to make the Society even better.  This year’s theme, Analysis for a More Secure World, provides the focus for the upcoming year.

MORS, in conjunction with the Society’s Sponsors, is planning an excellent slate of meetings during the upcoming MORS year. These include:

Wargaming and Analysis, NG-TASC Heritage Conf. Center, Chantilly, VA, 16-18 October 2007, Ted Smyth, FS, General Chair, Doug Williams, Technical Chair;

Innovative Operations Research Methods for IED Defeat, JHU/APL, Laurel, MD, 13-15 November 2007, Steve Reiss, Chair;

Improving Cooperation Among Nations for Irregular Warfare Analysis, Naval Postgraduate School, Monterey, CA, 11-13 December 2007, Dr. Al Sweetser and Dr. Karsten Engelmann, Co-Chairs;

Analytic Tools for Deterrence and Policy Assessment, JHU/APL, Laurel, MD, 5-7 February 2008, Pat McKenna, Chair; and,

Integrated Modeling of Emerging Societies, Argonne National Lab, APS Conference Center, Argonne, IL, 15-17 April 2008, Dr. John Hummel, Chair.

The Education Colloquium will be held in early spring 2008 at the Air Force Institute of Technology, Wright-Patterson AFB, Dayton, OH.  I want to encourage you to attend the Colloquium and witness some of the brightest students in the country as they compete in the Student Competition and present their ongoing student projects and theses.  Finally, the MORS year will conclude 10-12 June 2008 with the 76th MORS Symposium, and the Society’s return to the United States Coast Guard Academy in New London, CT after a 38-year absence.

In addition to our meetings, we are working several initiatives to improve the Society and benefits of membership.  We are continuing and expanding upon the exciting mentorship program initiated two years ago by our Education Committee, including tutorials as part of every meeting this year, expanding our use of web-based capabilities to include on-line registration for meetings and symposia, expanding our interaction with all users of military operations research to include outreach to civilian educational institutions, as well as institute a Junior Analyst Award to be presented at the 76th Symposium.  For the latest updates on our meeting slate and the initiatives mentioned above please check the MORS website http://www.mors.org or contact the MORS office.

This is your Society.  I encourage you to share your ideas and your time as we work this year to make our Society better.  Please contact me, the members of the Executive council, members of the Board of Directors, and the MORS Office Staff with your ideas for Analysis for a More Secure World.
