2008 Education Colloquium
Air Force Institute of Technology
Dayton, OH
4-5 March 2008

PRESENTATIONS

Dear Colleague,

On March 4-5, 2008 the Military Operations Research Society (MORS) will hold its annual Education and Professional Development Colloquium at the Air Force Institute of Technology (AFIT), Dayton, OH. The goal for the Colloquium is for the participants to leave the Colloquium with an appreciation of the need for improving their analysis abilities through the constant learning of new, revised and improved techniques across the operations research spectrum. We also provide numerous opportunities for professional and social networking, as some of the best experiences of the Colloquium come through a student’s interaction with students and faculty from other schools, as well as interactions with operations research professionals.

We will again have the quick-turn, student OR analysis competition, which was a great success at last year’s colloquium. The analysis competition will consist of mixed groups (military and civilian, undergraduate and graduate) of students tasked to develop an approach to solving a particular problem using the tools that they are learning in classes. The student teams will be given their problems on the first day and have several hours to develop their approach. Later in course of the colloquium they will have the opportunity to brief their problem and approach to a distinguished panel of senior analysts who will judge the competition. Prizes will be awarded for excellent analytical work. This competition was the brainchild of the late Rick Rosenthal, Distinguished Professor at the Naval Postgraduate School in Monterey, CA, in honor of whom the prize is named.

In addition to the competition, the colloquium will feature speakers who represent OR analytical agencies, professional societies, operational field analysts, civilian and military educators, students, OR practitioners, and sponsors of OR professional development programs. Presentations will focus on current unclassified work and provide an historical perspective. Students from all levels (undergraduate and graduate) will have the opportunity to present their work during the two-day colloquium.

You are invited to participate in this special education and professional development gathering and to witness and enjoy the student competition. The event is free, unclassified, and open to all operations research analysts, analytical agencies, educational institutions, and military operational decision makers. Attendance will be limited by space available. An application form to attend the workshop is enclosed.
