Working Group 12 Charter
Land and Expeditionary Warfare

(Last Updated 11 July 2002)

PURPOSE: The purpose of the Land & Expeditionary Warfare Working Group is to review, discuss, and assess analytic methods for improving the capabilities of US and allied military forces for conducting ground combat campaigns.

DISCUSSION: Issues of interest include those related to tactics and doctrine for the employment of combined arms forces, force planning, training, and the acquisition of new and product improved. Revolutions in information warfare and the application of information technologies are subjects of much discussion in the OR community of late, and WG 12 is interested in those as well. There are numerous areas of overlap in WG 12 subjects, including WG 2 (NBC Defence), WG 4 (Air & Missile Defence), WG 10 (Unmanned Systems), WG 17 (Joint Campaign Analysis), and WG 29 (Modeling, Simulation, & Wargaming). WG 12 has a legitimate interest in all these areas, but only solicits papers, presentations, and discussions in these areas on topics as they pertain to land & expeditionary warfare. Previous topics of discussion in this WG (and it's predecessor's, the old WG 10 and AS-5) include information operations, information warfare, analytical methods of combat resolution in models and simulations, adverse environments and battlefield obscuration, armor protection system advances, terrain analysis, command and control application, the application of weapons of mass destruction in tactical situations, and digital battlefield control systems. This is by no means a complete list, but it demonstrates the variety of functional areas to the core of warfare, the land combat phase.

OTHER WORKING GROUPS: As part of Composite Group C, WG 12 conducts joint sessions with WG 13 (Littoral Warfare), WG 14 (Power Projection), WG 15 (Air Combat), WG 16 (Special Operations and OOTW), and WG 17 (Joint Campaign Analysis). WG 12 is also a natural fit for joint sessions with WG 2 (NBC Defence) and WG 29 (Modeling, Simulation, and Wargaming).
