Operational Contributions of Space
(Last Updated 28 August 2007)
Purpose: The purpose of WG 10 is to provide an opportunity for discussion, critique, and exchange of ongoing and recently completed operations research analysis which addresses quantitatively the operational contribution of current and future space systems application to offensive and defensive military operations.
Discussion: DoD transformations to Capabilities-Based Planning (CBP) and Network-Centric Operations (NCO), like transformations of the past, are ones to which MORS analysts have proactively responded. For CBP, analysts working on space programs have guided acquisition decisions in two ways. First, by assessing the warfighting capabilities which proposed systems contribute as individual systems, and those capabilities added within the context of the Family of Systems (FoS) in which they will operate. Second, as our military increases its lethality and effectiveness through NCO, analysts have ensured that our military planners appreciate and leverage the full value of space systems for communication, navigation, intelligence, space operations, and force applications. To accomplish this analysis transformation, MORS members have taken advantage of the increasing power of software tools coupled with proven OR techniques, such as Decision Analysis, Simulation, Optimization, and Wargaming. WG 10 seeks to encourage OR practitioners by showcasing analysis efforts that help our nation “hold the high ground” from space. WG 10 presentations, as well as activities throughout the year, are selected because they demonstrate solid OR techniques applied to helping our nation acquire and operate Space Systems by assessing their operational contributions. |
