Operational Research in the RAF

Warfare Modeling — Published by the Military Operations Research Society in cooperation with John Wiley & Sons — 600 pages, $35.00 plus $10.00 freight (Domestic).

Warfare Modeling was selected for publication by MORS because it contains 25 state-of-the-art chapters, addressing a wide class of operations research models that are of central importance in military planning, analysis and operations. Research on this subject matter seldom appears in the open literature. Most of it appears in reports and documents of government agencies and advisory corporations. This book is an invaluable reference for military OR professionals as well as for a more general audience of researchers and practitioners. The scope of models included — analytic and simulative, stochastic and deterministic, simple and complex, applied and theoretical, domestic and international — is very broad.

Warfare Modeling was edited by Jerome Bracken of Yale University, Moshe Kress of Israel's Center for Military Analyses, and Richard E. Rosenthal of the US Naval Postgraduate School. The Forward is by Wayne P. Hughes, Jr., a retired Navy captain and MORS Fellow.

Military Modeling for Decision Making, Third Edition — Published by Military Operations Research Society — 375 pages, $40.00 plus $10.00 freight (Domestic).  (ISBN 0-930473-01-9)

Military Modeling for Decision Making, Third Edition is the latest step in MORS' dedication to furthering the technical base and professionalism of our membership and the military operations research community at large.

From its beginning, military operations research has aimed to help decision makers choose more optimal courses of action. Models have been the mainstay of our toolkit, analysis is our methodology, and better decisions are our objective. The purpose of this monograph is to enhance the analytical tools, knowledge of our current members, and to provide a collated reference for the young analysts yet to join our ranks. It is a compilation of chapters written by leaders of the military operations research community discussing the development and application of models for military decision making. The authors and editors of the third edition are paying particular attention to the applications of military modeling for decisions in the main domains of military endeavor. This edition has significantly increased the coverage of operational uses of models and has added chapters on training analysis and VV&A. This product is noteworthy in capturing the uses of modeling in recent operations such as DESERT STORM and in relating the potential and pitfalls of some of the new modeling techniques.

Methods of Operations Research — Published by Military Operations Research Society — $25.00 plus $10.00 freight (Domestic). (ISBN 0-930473-07-8)

Morse and Kimball published their seminal work so that the scope, methods, and triumphs of operations research during World War II would be available to and appreciated by scientists, engineers, and the armed forces. Since the end of World War II operations research techniques have also been applied in industry and other nonmilitary operations.

Search and Screening — Published by Military Operations Research Society — $24.00 plus $10.00 freight (Domestic). (ISBN 0-930473-08-6)

Search and Screening is the second reprint in the MORS Heritage Series. Dr. Bernard Osgood Koopman has played a significant role in the military operations research profession. Along with Dr. Kimball, co-author of our first classic (Methods of Operations Research), he helped to pioneer the modern theory of search as applied in World War II and designed many naval operating plans. In 1979, he became the second recipient of the MORS Vance R. Wanner Memorial Award, presented to those who have played a major role in strengthening the profession.

This publication has enduring value because as stated in the preface of this book, even though this volume has long been out of print, "extracts and translations of parts of it are being used both in the United States and in many other nations giving scientific naval instructions." Since its original print, it has continually been updated. One of the individuals mentioned in preface who has "helped make important improvements" is CAPT Wayne Hughes, USN, (Ret) (MORS Past President, MORS Fellow and Wanner Award recipient). MORS' roots are truly evident in this book.

Analysis for Military Decisions — Published by Military Operations Research Society — $22.00 plus $10.00 freight (Domestic). (ISBN 0-930473-10-8)

Analysis for Military Decisions is the third reprint in the MORS Heritage Series. This publication, along with Morse & Kimball and Koopman, are listed in "Some Military Operations Research (MOR) Classics" by Clayton J. Thomas, FS as recommended reading. As Clay wrote, "What are the MOR classics? ... books that have been especially influential in the development of MOR or MOR analysts."

Analysis for Military Decisions is a compilation of articles by various authors and includes "... a survey of military systems analysis, and an example. ... The example presented is an adaptation from an actual study. It is used to illustrate the elements and language of analysis, to demonstrate how an analyst might approach a problem, and to point out some of the difficulties he might encounter." Analysis for Military Decisions is a must for every analyst’s bookshelf.

Mathematical Models of Target Coverage and Missile Allocation — Published by Military Operations Research Society — $21.00 plus $10.00 freight (Domestic). (ISBN 0-930473-11-6)

Mathematical Models of Target Coverage and Missile Allocation, edited by A. Ross Eckler and Stefan A. Burr, is the fourth reprint in the MORS Heritage Series.  This book is a worthy addition to the series that began in 1998 with Methods of Operations Research by Phillip M. Morse and George E. Kimball, and continued with Search and Screening by Bernard O. Koopman in 1999, and Analysis for Military Decisions edited by E. S. Quade in 2000.  Mathematical Models of Target Coverage and Missile Allocation is further distinguished by the fact that its original edition (1972) was the first monograph published by MORS.  This book describes highly technical and extremely innovative applications of probability theory, statistics, game theory, stochastic processes, and optimization methods that are as pertinent today as they were 29 years ago.  It is a valuable adjunct to every analyst’s bookshelf!
