Agenda

Dear Colleague:

On 6-7 April 2004, the Military Operations Research Society (MORS) will hold its annual Educational and Professional Development Colloquium at the US Military Academy, West Point, NY.  All sessions will take place in Thayer Hall, Room 144.  The goal of the Colloquium is to bring great minds together and to provide a variety of presentations on all aspects of Operations Research (OR) education and the professional development of analysts.  The Colloquium provides speakers who represent OR analytical agencies, professional societies, operational field analysts, civilian and military educators, students, OR practitioners, and sponsors of OR professional development programs.  Consistent with this year’s MORS Symposium theme of “OR Support for Tomorrow’s Force,” the Colloquium theme is “Training and Educating Combat Analysts.”  We will key on the interchange of ideas between creators and benefactors of analytical talent, to include the independent practitioners, agency analysts, field analysts, educators, students, professional developers and warrior supporting agencies.

We will again have the quick-turn, student OR analysis competition, which was a great success at last year’s Colloquium.  The analysis competition will consist of mixed groups of military and  civilian, undergraduate and graduate students pitted against sponsor-provided, realistic, short timeline military OR problems.  Our student teams will be handed their problems the first day and given five hours to solve them. They will then return the morning of the second day to brief on their analysis results.  Our panel of distinguished senior analysts will judge the results of our student competition, and based on the merits of their team efforts, distribute awards for excellent analytical work.

In addition to the competition, we will have presentations on teaching problem solving from the ORSA programs at the military academies and civilian schoolhouses.  Service speakers will talk about their program to develop and deploy combat analysts.  We have also lined up several speakers whose presentations will be of interest to all.  In all, the more than fifteen presentations will be fast and hard-hitting—a warrior style of delivery with emphasis on operational flavor, solid content, and impact.  You will be listening and talking to experts in the field of operations research, professional educators, and practitioners who serve the Services.  You are invited to participate in this special education and professional development gathering and to witness and enjoy the student competition.  For further information, please read the enclosed tentative agenda.

The event is free, unclassified, and open to all operations research analysts, analytical agencies, educational institutions, and military operational decisionmakers.  Attendance will be limited by space available.  An application form to attend the workshop is enclosed.  Daily refreshments will be available on both days of the Colloquium at a cost of $10.00 each day.  We have reserved a block of rooms at the historic Thayer Hotel, 674 Thayer Road, West Point, NY  10996; phone 800-247-5047 or 845-446-4731, at a cost of $121/night plus tax (mention the Military Operations Research Society).

If you are presenting at the Colloquium, please fill out a MORS Disclosure Form (Form 712 AU or BU) and submit it to the MORS office.  All presentations must be UNCLASSIFIED and APPROVED FOR PUBLIC RELEASE.
